The first prototype of Delft Dynamics’ DroneSphere has been unveiled, thanks to students of the Avans University of Applied Sciences, Minor Aerospace Engineering & Maintenance (Breda).

This is the first ball shaped DroneBox in the world, as far as known, and the biggest advantage is its perfect water resistance thanks to a rotating hemisphere

“Delft Dynamics started in 2006 with the development of drones, and since 2013 we also develop different types of DroneBoxes, some of them integrated in vehicles.”, says Arnout de Jong, CEO of Delft Dynamics. “We have shown in the past that we were the first with several innovations, like DroneCatcher in 2014 (a drone which shoots a net to catch unwanted drones) and the releasable tether system in 2018. Although several companies have copied our ideas, we believe in sharing our ideas and based on the responses, we will put more effort to put these inventions into the market.”

The new DroneSpheres can e.g. be put on poles or sideways against structures. The aerodynamic shape will have less drag compared to rectangular shaped boxes. There is also no need for a lifting system and the DroneSpheres can be equipped with automatic charging systems or (powered) tethers for continuous deployment. In a network of DroneSpheres, drones can fly from one shelter to another. The dimensions can of course be adjusted depending on the types of drones to be used.

“We believe there is a big market for these kinds of drone innovations and are looking forward for the response of interested organizations. It is good to show that Delft Dynamics remains at the forefront of drone research and development.”, concludes De Jong.
