Establishing Safety standards and a European certification network

AI opens up enormous possibilities for flight control, navigation, detect-and-avoid systems and autonomous decision support. Machine learning will also play a key role in shaping the future of unmanned aviation. However, there is as yet no European certification and regulatory framework for the use of AI in UAS.

However, this is necessary in order to be able to use new technologies safely and reliably. Today’s requirements must take account of the specific characteristics of AI systems and make it clear how their safety and reliability are assessed.

The UAV DACH is therefore calling for specific European regulations governing the certification of AI and machine learning in UAS. These should take into account applications such as detect and avoid, situational awareness, risk assessment and autonomous decision support.

Europe must facilitate innovation whilst at the same time establishing transparent safety standards. An appropriate certification framework can combine both and thus lay the foundations for the safe operation and further development of intelligent UAS.

After all, the future of unmanned aviation will also depend on how Europe regulates the use of AI. Not too late. Not too early. But just right.
