EASA Publishes Draft Regulatory Framework for the Use of AI in Aviation

With the EU AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689), the Member States of the European Union agreed in May 2025 on the world's first law regulating artificial intelligence. And, of course, the topic of AI also plays an important role with regard to the future of aviation. Not least when it comes to the future digitalisation of airspace and the equal coexistence of manned and unmanned aircraft.

With the Notice of Proposed Amendment (NPA) 2025-07, the European Aviation Safety Agency has now presented the first draft of a concrete regulatory framework for the use of artificial intelligence in aviation. With this, EASA aims to pave the way for future applications of levels 1 (AI support) and 2 (human-AI interaction).

Over the next three months, stakeholders from manned and unmanned aviation are invited to participate in an initial public consultation to influence the specific design of the legal framework for the safe use of AI technology in all areas of aviation operations. After all, the possibilities offered by artificial intelligence, from design and development to practical flight operations and approval and coordination processes, are already significant today and are sure to become even more so as the technologies continue to advance.
