Federal Aviation Strategy Must Deliver Real Support for UAS Industry Growth

The potential of unmanned aviation is still underestimated. The aviation strategy presented by the German federal government at the International Aerospace Exhibition identifies several key areas of action for future drone policy. But these announcements must now be followed by consistent action.

“We cannot stop at mere lip service now,” warns Dr. Gerald Wissel, CEO of the industry association UAV DACH. “In countries such as the U.S., China, and Israel, we see massive financial and structural support for the civilian and military UAS industry. Germany and Europe cannot afford to fall completely behind in this area.”

The rapid expansion of industrial manufacturing capacity is of central importance. “Reliable and predictable demand signals are essential so that German and European manufacturers can create the conditions necessary to produce high-quality and competitively priced drones in large quantities,” explains Dr. Gerald Wissel. “Government agencies, the public sector, law enforcement and emergency services organizations, and even KRITIS companies can already act as anchor customers today to generate reliable demand, thereby enabling the growth and competitiveness of the UAS industry.”
